Vespa philippinensis

Common name(s): None that I know of

I have never seen a specimen of this species in person. It is apparently rather closely-related to Vespa tropica, and is endemic (found only in) the Philippines. It is known to be a ground-nesting species, with a nest design similar to that of other ground-nesting species such as Vespa tropica. The following two papers contain information about the only known occasion a colony was collected.

Starr, C.K. A colony of the hornet Vespa philippinensis (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Insectes Sociaux 34:1-9.

Starr, C.K. & R.S. Jacobson. Nest structure in Philippine hornets (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Vespa spp.). Japanese Journal of Entomology 58:125-143.
